So you would like to take up rowing!
Rowing is a great sport either for fun or competition. It will provide you with good exercise and fitness throughout the year and a chance to meet new friends from all walks of life.
The Boathouse is located on Torquay harbour at the rear of the tunnel running between the last shop and the steps alongside Living Coasts. For information, and to be sure you will be greeted at the Boathouse please contact our Welfare Officer to confirm attendance.
When can you go?
Club training on Thursday Evenings will be on the water during the summer and land training during the winter months. Land Training consists of Circuits, Weight Training, Ergo (Rowing Machine) and running for general fitness. Water outings are on Sunday mornings between 10am and midday throughout the year.
What do you wear?
For Land Training nights you will require general training kit. For example, T-shirt, shorts or leggings, socks and trainers.
In the boat it is best to wear many layers of thin warm tops that can be peeled off as you get warmer through the session. It is also advisable to bring a towel and a change of clothing especially if its raining. Shoes are bolted onto the foot stretchers in the boat.
All rowers are expected to wear the Club Kit when racing.
How do you learn?
The Club runs a Beginners Course which consists of ten sessions run over seven weeks.
Three session are land based in the Boathouse. Six sessions are on the water in various boats, either sculling or sweep oared. One session will consist of the capsize drill and 50m swimming test in the pool.
We require a minimum of four people to run the course but this does not mean you cannot come down and join in before hand.
After completing the Beginners Course you will be moved into the various squads: Ladies Novice, Mens Novice, Junior Ladies or Junior Men.
What does it cost?
We ask for a nominal fee of £10 to all participants on the Beginners Course. If you like it and choose to become a member, this will be deducted from your subscription when you fully join the Club.
Full Membership will not only give you access to boats. training equipment and coaches but also includes membership of the Royal Torbay Yacht Club with full use of it's facilities.
