Thatcher Rock 8k 2013 - Saturday 11th May 2013
Torquay's Thatcher Rock race was contested for the 5th time in blustery conditions. Crews from the usual suspects of Exmouth, Plymouth Mayflower, Paignton, River Teign and hosts Torquay took to the water for the first coastal event of the season.

The weather forecast was set to provide an interesting challenge for those willing to take it, and first up were the Ladies racing over the well established 8km Thatcher Rock course. All of the coastal clubs had quads on the start line alongside a double from River Teign and a surprise entry from Dart Totnes making their open water debut.

For those new to coastal rowing, the start provides the option of a standing or a rolling start dependent on the coxswains skill and nerve to gamble not to overshoot the start line before the starter's horn.

All boats were bunched quite closely together at the first pillar buoy past London Bridge as they took advantage of the tail wind. But it was Exmouth, Totnes, Mayflower and Teign that started a break away group by the Rock turn. Then it was grit and determination that got all these crews across a rolling 3.5km leg rowing into the strong winds across Torbay. At the finish it was Exmouth who won convincingly from a brave effort by Totnes with a more than impressive first coastal row.

The wind had continued to pick up as the Men took to the water. A quick start saw Torquay take an early lead into the first turn and saw them hold that lead until the end. Having narrowly missed out in this event twelve months ago, this crew were determined to power their way through the growing waves and white horses. A brave row from Mayflower pushed Torquay all the way but was not quite enough on the day with Paignton working hard for third and their best ever Thatcher result.

The last race saw the Junior and Mixed crews race together across a shorter course. Normally over 6km the course was shortened further and saw the crews navigating part of the Thatcher course in reverse so they were rowing with the strongest winds at their tails. A magnificent performance from a Plymouth and Mayflower combined crew took the Mixed trophy in style and Paignton's Juniors overcame the challenge from two Torquay boats to see the honours of the day shared by four different clubs.

Both Torquay Ladies crews of Jan, Kathy, Josie and Andrea and Clare, Amy, Katharina and Becky did a great job getting through that long straight against the wind and running Paignton close. Our juniors Chris, Adrian, Rosie, Chloe, Otis and Andrew made their debuts in coastal racing. And Aaron and Michael started in winning style in the Mens quad.

Torquay Rowing Club would like to thank all the rowers, coxes, coaches, umpires, volunteers, supporters and friends of all the competing clubs who made this another great event.
